Do Look Back
Avoid beating yourself up over previous weight-loss attempts. Instead, think back to what worked and what did not, and apply those lessons to now. How much weight did you lose and in what period of time? Were you able to maintain that weight loss? Were you physically active? Did you have social support as you worked toward your goals? When you use positive experiences from the past to support your current efforts you’ll find that they can make your work easier.

Try Paddle Surfing
If you like the water, you’ll love paddle surfing. No waves required. Get a board, preferably wide to start (this can be expensive so it’s a good idea to rent one first) and a paddle. Balance yourself in a standing position on the board and paddle away! Get a total-body workout, tone your abs and enjoy the beautiful scenery around the water.
Energy, Diet and You…

Energy Crisis?
If you’re dragging, your first impulse might be to grab some sugar or caffeine, or perhaps an energy bar or drink. However, such quick-energy sources will just leave you even more drained than before once the effects wear off. Steady energy requires a more pragmatic, long-term approach:
- Eat something every three to four hours to keep your blood sugar on an even keel. The 5 & 1 Plan is perfect for this requirement.
- Don’t eat too much in one sitting – when you overeat, your body’s energy is diverted into digesting your meal, leaving you lethargic.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Exercise, Injury and Discomfort…
September 8, 2008
Fight Friction
Sometimes, exercise hurts – not because you’ve injured yourself or pushed yourself too far, but because your clothes or your shoes cause chafing and blisters! Here are some tips for minimizing this discomfort:
- Try a different fabric (synthetic fabrics are preferable to cotton) or a different cut of clothing (biker-style shorts are less likely to chafe than loose shorts).
- If your bra chafes, choose one that is flat or has covered seams. If your nipples ache, you can protect them with the same cushions that you would use for corns on your feet!
- Apply talcum powder or petroleum jelly to sensitive areas (you can buy a product designed especially for this purpose at specialty running stores), or cover with a bandage.

The following list is provided to serve as a general guideline of portion sizes to stay under for items commonly consumed. Typically, a condiment should provide NO MORE THAN 1 gram of CARBOHYDRATE per option’s serving size. Please read nutrition labels to determine whether your specific product is appropriate for use in terms of carbohydrate content.
